Visitors

These past two months we've had plenty of lovely visitors.

JORDAN AND CARLYE

Joel really took to Jordan and insisted that he read books with him.

Sorry Carlye, this is the best (and only photo) of you. But Micah did like you! Yah for you!
It was great to hear Jordan's sermon and host them for lunch. We've missed seeing you guys even though you live so close.

GREG AND KARMEN

These boys loved having books read to them.

Can you sense a theme here?

It was wonderful to catch up with Greg and Karmen. You should have seen Karmen's face light up when Dan handed her a Chai tea. She was so happy!

DARNELL, CHRISTINA, CODY AND MAKAI

My, those little boys have grown up. Micah and Makai (the young dynamic duo) got to meet in person for the first time. Those two are going to be (silent) trouble makers!

Makai shared his watermelon with me! It was nice to have bonding time with Makai.

This picture totally reminds me of when Cody was younger. Anybody remember his "funny" face?

It was nice to get to know Makai's personality. There is only so much you can catch while Skyping.

Cody and Joel together at last. Cody was giving Joel a hand down the stairs.

It was amazing to hang out with Darnell and Christina in the McBarkman house. They definitely notice things that no one else did!

We had a great time sipping chugging Chai, cooking all of you a "requested" meal and chatting about the past year. We look forward to your next visit. You guys are great friends and we miss having you around on a regular basis.

We're BACK!

Finally! The day you all have been waiting for! We are hoping to resuscitate this poor old blog. We make no promises, but our goal is to blog more. Probably because we will need something to fill our time now that canning is over....at least for now. (I'm still trying to convince Dan to can pears and apple sauce).

We make no promises since those two little rascals have quite often thrown a wrench in our plans. (cough cough, mostly Micah, cough cough). But I'll give him a break. That poor little guy has FINALLY had his teeth break through his gums. (They've been going up and down, swelling and returning to normal for 8 LONG months). But in the last four days, he has gotten four new molars and four incisors (eye teeth). Yep, eight teeth in four days. No wonder he only sleeps in one hour increments.

Joel has finally lived up to his age and the "terrible twos" are hitting in full force. He's been whining and easily frustrated at himself (and us) about, you know, two year old problems. Like the wrong colour of cup or being unable to find a wooden spoon. Its fantastic (and hilarious) but only when we've had enough sleep to be patient with him. Needless to say, the last four days have been trying!

Dan is enjoying his new job but is still adjusting to waking up early. We've both been fairly tired. Between Micah's hour long sleep/cry/wake/scream schedule and his uncanny ability to plan a wake up call within the hour before the alarm is to go off (so you can't fall back to sleep), we have been exhausted. Add to that, endless evenings of canning, visitors, sourdough prep and dishes. We barely fall into bed before ten. Then we lie there talking and realize that we haven't said a word to one another since Dan got home at 3:30. So we catch up on the day and each others lives and lo and behold, eleven rolls around before you know it. (and a lovely wake up call from Micah just when you turn out the lights). We've been trying to take a few nights to enjoy each others company. You know, before Coitus Interuptus (aka Micah) strikes with a 95% accuracy rate. Really, we don't know how he does it, but man that kid can read our minds or smell the pheromones.

Needless to say, this little blog got neglected. BUT, we hope to be back more often. Here's to a new year!

We're still alive...

We promise! We're busy adjusting to our new life and home.
We're busy loving our family time together in the afternoons and evenings.
We're busy preserving food for the winter.
We're busy raising two little boys who LOVE the sunshine and after dinner walks.
We're busy adjust to one little boy whose sleep schedule and habits are changing (perhaps from the 3 molars and 3 eye teeth that have FINALLY just popped through...yes, all at once.)
We're busy trying to find an evening for updating and busy having a little one cry for two hours straight on both nights that we had "free."
We're busy visiting with various friends from around the globe and loving every second of it.
We're busy doing yard work and landscaping our new home.
We're busy trying to catch up on long lost sleep.

Needless to say, once fall hits, we will be back in full force. Your computers are not broken. We are still here. We hear your pleas for updates.

But we are enjoying our new home, some much needed family time, and the pop of canning jars sealing.
We are dealing with the frustrations of raising children, to do lists that never end, and evenings that are never long enough.

Hopefully there will be a few more posts in the coming weeks (I uploaded pictures today for a few new posts). We are trying hard to blog but we are enjoying life a little too much to slow down enough to write about it.

What we've been up to

Literally, we've been packing and unpacking, packing and unpacking, packing and unpacking, packing and unpacking.....

Packing up the old house

and unpacking the new home

Two days later, packing up for Canada Day

And unpacking Canada Day (okay, it was just snacks, a stroller and lawn chairs...but I couldn't find half of those things, so it took almost 3 hours and 30 boxes!)

The next day, we packed up for day trip to visit Dad in Naramata. (Oh wait, and then unpacked from Naramata)

Two weeks later, we packed up for our vacation to Oregon, and are currently unpacking from that trip.

Between all of that packing and unpacking, we've been gardening,

cleaning up messes (oh Micah, the regurgitator)

cutting hair (both boys)

playing in our new playhouse (thanks Uncle Jon and Auntie Sarah)

installing baby gates and "security" systems to prevent tumbles down stairs (only a little too late, eh Micah)

snuggling baby Deklan

starting a new job

cleaning up sand (oh the sand)

and doing oodles of laundry.

We hope to be back to this old blog soon. But its preservation season (hello canning!). And visiting with friends from Korea and Philippines season. And kids staying up late so we can walk in the cool evening air season. And finish unpacking those last few boxes season.
 Soon folks, soon.

New Home: Day 1

Do you see what I see? Boys happily playing in the dirt, while I unpack boxes take their picture.

Day one at the new house involved a lot of exploration, plenty of sandy clothes and two happy boys.

The added bonus was there there is SO much space, that I didn't trip over the boys at all. Which is a HUGE blessing to me. Normally, I spend half my day tripping over boys or toys or being annoyed that there is no space for me to walk. But day one brought change. And made me one happy momma!

What a difference a year makes

This is our care group at our year end wrap up last year.

And this is the main group from this year. We've had a few other join us in the last two weeks.
Do you notice the one constant thing?
OUR FAMILY!
It seems as though God has called our family into a different kind of ministry.
We take care of missionaries and those who visit/serve for a year (or two).
If I had the pictures available, I would share a picture from the year before, which would have Dan, Amy and Fareedah in it.
We've been at this church for a few years now, and almost every year the members of our care group change.  This year we hope for some stability. We hope that those pictured would remain. We hope that those who have visited in the last two weeks would join. We hope that others out there would be a welcomed addition. And we hope that those who return (even for just a few weeks) would feel welcomed home.
But ultimately our goal is to never have potluck for two again!
(at least we know that won't happen, since our family has grown to four!)

We love all our groups (past and present). We are excited to see what God has in store for us this year. We will see you for dinner on Mondays in September (at least that's the goal!)

6 Months

Six very long months. The last six months with Micah have been a challenge. He is normally a lovely boy during the day, but the nights are another story. We've shared how Micah spent 2 1/2 months waking up every 45 minutes. He slowly got better, stretching his sleeping time to two hours. It felt wonderful compared to the 45 we were getting. But its hard to live off of 2 hours of sleep at a time. That is what newborns do, not one year olds! Remember back to when you have a newborn. You take care of the baby and that's about it. You don't cook meals, grocery shop, clean or have "regular life" if you don't have to. But here we are, with an active one year old, a two and half year old and still only sleeping 2 hours at a time. Its challenging.

But sometime last week, things changed. I especially noticed a change when Dan was drinking tea in the morning instead of his regular coffee. He noticed that I was getting up with him and the boys at seven, instead of burying myself in the covers until eight. What changed? We started to get three or four hour stretches of sleep. (Which, by the way, make you feel like a million bucks!). During the day, naps doubled in length to three hours. When Micah was awake, I caught a glimpse of the child I once knew. He was giggling and smiling and overall happy. He was snuggly, but no longer his clingy self. He was the child I remember having six months ago. I miss that happy child!

These last six months have been tough on that little boy. He's been teething, had numerous ear aches, belly troubles from meds, growing pains, stitches, and many, many colds. For the last six months, he hasn't been well.

I remember one day, Katrina was over and commented that Micah didn't have a runny nose. I barely noticed, since his nose was always runny. What I do remember is that he was happy and sleeping well. When Katrina and I were talking about Micah and his sleep habits, Katrina mentioned that he really is a good sleeper. He just hasn't felt well and has been in pain for months. It shocked me (because at the time we were getting up every 45 minutes). But as time goes on, it is the truth. He does sleep well (when he's not in pain).

It makes me sad that we've missed out on Micah's giggles, smiles and independence. But I have enjoyed the snuggles. We hope and pray that Micah will continue to feel well and that his happy self with shine through. (Although last night was a bad night and low and behold, he woke up this morning with a fever. Boo.)

Two (semi-related) side notes:
1. The worst thing that people have said to me when I mention the sleep due to pain etc. is that their child just popped two teeth and they didn't even notice. Which sometimes makes me giggle with its their first two teeth...those first two barely registered with Micah. When he got the next six at once, we barely noticed. But try getting a molar and four eye teeth at once. Oh, and the molar came so fast that there is a purple blood blister in his gums.  Every child deals with pain differently.  Micah takes it hard. Okay, he just doesn't sleep. But he barely cries at all. He just doesn't sleep well when he's in pain. Every child has their own way of dealing with pain. Some cry, some don't sleep. Micah just doesn't sleep.

2. I have felt like a bad mother. I've yelled more than I like. I've been impatient. I've failed to teach my children things. I've let discipline go. I've just been too tired. Sometimes I see the kids misbehaving and I just don't have the energy to deal with it. It takes a lot to show kids the right way to behave. I remember a mom at the gym sympathizing with me and saying, "No wonder you're tired." She went on to encourage me. I don't remember what she said. I just remember that she didn't give me any sleep tips. She just sympathized with me. And that was what I needed. I know I'm not a bad mother. I'm just a better mother when I get sleep.

Nothing like moving

to bring out your inner hoarder. Its amazing how much junk you have swirling around in your cupboards. Yet, somehow, we use it all. (okay, except for two containers which were donated to the MCC).

The sad thing, is that this has happened in numerous areas of our house. And when we move into our new house, we will end up with two deep freezers, two BBQs, and two dishwashers.
HOARDERS!
